
DOUGLAS COUNTY —Law enforcement continue to investigate after a concerning social media post involving a weapon at Billy Mills Middle School, 2734 Louisiana Street in Lawrence, according to Lawrence Police.
On Thursday morning, Lawrence police, Douglas County Sheriff deputies and the Kansas Highway Patrol responded and in conjunction with USD 497 officials locked down the school, evacuated students to the football field and worked to ensure no students were hiding in the building. Some students did hide when the school was placed on lockdown, according to police.
All students were required to leave personal items for clearance. Police called in a firearm detection dog to search and did not find a firearm.
Police have identified the circumstances that promoted the response and will complete a thorough investigation.
The original post came from Snapchat, and Detectives were working to contact Snapchat to get information on the post, but the person that allegedly posted it had not been identified. The person who reported the post did not know who made the post.
