Kan. man jailed after wrong-way, high-speed chase and crash

DOUGLAS COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect after an early morning chase in Douglas County.

Just after 12:15a.m. Saturday, a sheriff's deputy initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle reported stolen by Lawrence Police, according to a media release.

The driver in the suspect vehicle initially stopped eastbound on Kansas 10 at the Church Street exit in Eudora but then fled eastbound. The Douglas County Sheriff and a Eudora Police officer pursued the vehicle.  The suspect crossed the median and was eastbound in the westbound lanes, where several westbound vehicle were also traveling.

As deputies attempted to disable the vehicle, the suspect exited the highway at a Edgerton Road, fled northbound and crashed at a curve at Edgerton Road and 79th Street in Johnson County.

After the crash, the driver ran from the vehicle. A Lawrence Police Department Drone eventually located the suspect identified as a 37-year-old Lawrence man.

The suspect was not injured in the crash and no other vehicles were damaged. The suspect is being held on requested charges of possession of stolen property valued at $25,000-$100,000, reckless driving, fleeing from law enforcement and a failure to warrant.
