SEDGWICK— A man who admitted killing a Kansas woman in front of her two children is going to prison for most of the rest of his life.
On Thursday, Judge Kevin Smith sentenced 26-year-old Edward Millan-Volcan to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years, a punishment commonly known as a "hard 25." The sentence was imposed on Count One of the case for the death of Sinay Leon-Montoya. He was also sentenced to an additional 13 years and 9 months for the attempted murder of Leon-Montoy's friend. That sentence will be served after the Count One sentence is complete, not at the same time. As a result, Millan-Volcan will not be eligible for parole for approximately 38 years and 9 months.
In June, Millan-Volcan pleaded guilty to first-degree felony murder and attempted first-degree murder in the July 17, 2025, stabbing death of Sinay Leon-Montoya. A second woman, Germany Torres Figueroa, was also stabbed and survived. Police say the attack occurred in front of Leon-Montoya's children.
District Attorney Marc Bennett and Assistant District Attorney Sophia Brunetti prosecuted the case.
