Gloria (Schaffer) Herrman

Gloria (Schaffer) Herrman, 76 of La Crosse Kansas, passed away suddenly from cardiac arrest on Wednesday, June 2, 2021, at Rush County Memorial Hospital.

A lifelong Rush County resident, she was born on November 5, 1944, in Liebenthal Kansas to Leonard and Clara (Unrein) Schaffer. On May 30, 1963, she married Richard B. Herrman, also of Liebenthal, at St. Joseph’s Church in Liebenthal. Upon marriage, they moved to La Crosse to start their lives together and soon had three children – Bryan, Debbie and Sonya. She was a proud and doting mother, a faithful wife, a strong working woman, and a constantly supporting presence in her family’s lives with her radiant smile, quick wit, and deeply unconditional love. Gloria worked as manager of the Ben Franklin and Banner Stores in La Crosse for many years before serving as La Crosse City Treasurer for 25 years. She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and enjoyed volunteering as a youth CCD teacher.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Ernest Schaffer and Conrad Schaffer, her husband Richard (1993), and longtime companion Jim Cairns of Hays.

She is survived by sisters Sherry Kershner (Jim) of La Crosse and Sandra Robben (Mike) of Victoria, her son, Bryan Herrman (Deb) of Lake Winnebago, Missouri, daughters Debbie Oborny (Frank) of Rye Colorado and Sonya Garrett (Mark Reade) of Hays, grandchildren Alyssa Auerbach (Paul), Chelsia Oborny, Grant Herrman, Carter Herrman, Kendahl Goetzmann (Brett) and Abby Garrett, great grandchildren Vera Auerbach and Stella Auerbach, and several in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be Friday, June 4, 2021, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.  A vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 P.M. 

Church visitation will be Saturday, June 5, 2021, from 9:30 A.M. to 10:20 A.M. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas.

Funeral service will be Saturday, June 5, 2021, at 10:30 A.M. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas, with Father Stephen Dabanka officiating.  Interment will be in the La Crosse City Cemetery, La Crosse, Kansas.

In lieu of flowers or plants, the family requests memorials to St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas, or St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Liebenthal, Kansas.
