Sentencing Day: Kansas felon found guilty of murder

SEDGWICK COUNTY—A Kansas felon accused of killing a man in 2024 in Wichita is scheduled for sentencing on Thursday afternoon.

Yancy Hermosillo, 37,  will appear before Judge Jeffrey Goering, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office. Hermosillo was found  guilty of  second degree; unintentional but reckless murder in the shooting death of 35-year-old Ladonte Ostrander on January 16, 2024.

Early the morning of the crime, police responded to a 911 call reporting gunshots in the 1000 block of S. Market in Wichita, according to Officer Juan Rebolledo. 

In the 900 block of S. Market Street, first responders discovered Ostrander with a gunshot wound to his lower extremities. Sedgwick County EMS transported him in critical condition to an area hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

Police arrested  Hermosillo  the following day. He has previous felony convictions for domestic battery, criminal threat,  and aggravated interference with parental custody, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.
