Kan. man who called 911 after deadly shooting is going to prison

JOHNSON COUNTY —A Kansas man who called 911 to turn himself in after a deadly shooting is going to prison.

On Feb. 3 Judge T. Kelly Ryan sentenced 24-year-old Dmariea Valentino Avance to 155 months in prison for 2nd degree murdery, according to the Johnson County District Attorney.

Last month, Avance pleaded no contest to second degree murder in the death of 21-year-old Markese D. Gleghorn of Lenexa outside a fast-food restaurant, according to the District Attorney's office.

Just before 7p.m. Jan. 16, 2024, police responded to the parking lot of a fast food restaurant in the 13330 W. 87th Street Parkway in Lenexa on the report of an armed disturbance.

According to a 911 caller, one person was shot at the location. When officers arrived, they located a man later identified as 21-year-old Markese D. Gleghorn of Lenexa inside a vehicle who had been shot. Officers attempted life-saving measures however Geighorn was pronounced deceased at the scene.

A few minutes after this initial call, police received another call from an individual later identified as Avance who said he was involved in the disturbance. Officers responded to an apartment in the 12700 block of W. 88th Circle where they took Avance into custody without incident.
