A fire in a feedlot building west of Salina resulted in a $177,000 loss Wednesday evening.

Deputies and Rural Fire District No. 3 personnel were dispatched at 6:58 p.m. Wednesday to the Rolling Hills Feedlot, 901 S. Hedville Road, for the report of a fire in a Morton Building, according to Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan.

Building damage was extensive.

Workers at the feedlot attempted to remove as much equipment as possible, however, a large Caterpillar bucket loader model JCB 427, a Bobcat model 670, and some ATVs were destroyed, Soldan said. It is believed that build-up of hay and dust around the engine compartment of the bucket loader ignited and then the fire spread in the building. Total loss was estimated at $177,000, according to Soldan.

One worker who suffered smoke inhalation was checked by EMS personnel, but refused treatment.
