Police investigating fatal Kansas officer shooting

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating  a fatal officer-involved shooting in the 1400 block of W. Haskell, where a Wichita Police officer discharged their firearm.

Just before 3:30p.m. Monday, police and Wichita Mental Health officials responded to report of a man threatening suicide who had access to firearms in the 1400 Block of W. Haskell in Wichita. according to Wichita Police Captain Aaron Moses.  The man's family made the call to police.

Crews arrived and began gathering information to assess the situation. They attempted contact by phone but did not receive an answer.

Officers approached the residence on foot believing the 27-year-old man was inside. As they approached and officer spotted a man sitting inside his vehicle.

“As officer approached the driver’s side of the vehicle a shot was fired from inside the vehicle. The officer then fired his weapon at the vehicle as he took cover,” according to Moses. Officers began life-saving measures.

EMS pronounced the man dead at the scene. No Wichita Police officers were injured.   

The Advanced Law Enforcement Response Team was activated and the Sedgwick County Sheriff's office will be in charge of the investigation.
