SHAWNEE COUNTY—Authorities say a fire at a Kansas home was intentionally set.
Just after 3:30p.m. Friday fire crews responded to a fire in a home at 1272 SW Garfield Ave. Topeka, according to Fire Marshal Todd Harrison.
Upon arrival, fire crews found moderate smoke coming from the rear of the home. Firefighters began a defensive fire attack, and were able to keep the fire confined to the exterior siding of the dwelling. A search of the structure revealed all occupants were able to escape unharmed
Preliminary investigation indicates the cause of the fire due to a child playing with a lighter, according to Harrison. The estimated dollar loss –$5000, all associated with structural loss.
Smoke detectors were not located within the home, according to Harrison.
