Owner, 5 dogs escape from Kansas house fire

SHAWNEE COUNTY— An electrical fire did significant damage to a Kansas home on Friday in Shawnee County.

Just before 5p.m. Friday, fire crews responded to a fire located at a home at 3513 S.W. 30th Street in Topeka, according to Fire Marshal Todd Harrison.

At the scene, fire crews found smoke coming from the garage door of a tri-level residential structure. After further investigation, crews found fire in the kitchen.  There were no occupants inside the structure at the time of the fire and the owner was able to evacuate five dogs. 

A preliminary investigation indicates the cause of the fire as accidental, associated with the failure of an electrical device. The estimated dollar loss – $25,000; $20,000 of which is associated with structural damage loss and $5,000 associated with content loss. There were no injuries reported. No working fire detectors were located within the home, according to Harrison.
