HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs used runs of 12-0 and 12-1 in the first half as they rolled to a 63-35 win over the Beloit Trojans in the first round of the 3A Norton sub-state at Al Billinger Fieldhouse Tuesday in Hays.
Trailing 3-2,. TMP’s Lucas Lang hit his first of six three pointers in the game sparking a 12-0 run to put TMP (18-4) on top 14-3.
Both Lang and Dylan Werth scored eight of their game high 22-points in the first quarter as TMP led 18-9 after one quarter of action.
TMP was able to build their lead back to 11 twice to open the second quarter but Beloit (5-13) answered with a 7-0 run cutting TMP’s lead to 23-19.
After a Gavin Unrein free throw Lang knocked down his second three pointer of the second quarter as the Monarchs finished the first half on a 12-1 run to take a 35-20 lead into the halftime break.
Werth and Lang combined to 16 more points in the third quarter as the Monarchs built a 30-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.
With a running clock in the fourth quarter TMP claimed the 63-35 victory.
Lucas Lang and Dylan Werth led all scorers with 22 points. The 22 points for Werth was a new career-high.
Kade Harris pulled a career-high eight rebounds for TMP.
The Monarchs will take on the Phillipsburg Panthers in Friday’s sub-state semifinals in Norton.
