
SHAWNEE COUNTY—Authorities are working to determine the cause of fire in an apartment building in Topeka.
Just before 4p.m. Monday, crews responded to an apartment building fire at 400 SW WesternAvenue in Topeka, according to a media release.
Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy black smoke coming from the first floor of a two-story apartment building. All residents had self-evacuated prior to firefighters arriving on scene.
Fire crews conducted a systematic search of the structure and safely retrieved one dog, which was returned safely to its owner.
Firefighters located the origin of the fire on the first floor and initiated an interior fire attack. Crews extinguished the fire, which had extended into the ceiling space between the first and second floors.
Smoke detectors were found in the structure. There were no injuries reported.
