SUV swerved to miss flying plywood, kills Kansas man

MONTGOMERY COUNTY —One person died in an accident just after 8p.m. Thursday in Montgomery County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Dodge Journey driven by Nicholas L. Barriger, 39, Chanute, was northbound on U.S. 169 just south of County Road 5300.

The driver made an evasive maneuver to avoid an airborne piece of plywood and struck a pedestrian identified as Darrin R Kebert Jr., 35, Cherryvale, who was on the right shoulder.

A northbound 2009 Chevy Impala driven by  Raymond W. Barron, 62, Cherryvale was unable to avoid the plywood and struck it.

Kebert was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Frontier Forensics.

Barriger, Barron and two children in the Dodge were properly restrained and not injured, according to the KHP.
