KANSAS CITY—One person died in a crash with a police vehicle during a pursuit early Friday in Kansas City.
Shortly after 5a.m. Friday, police initiated a vehicle stop on a white sedan traveling south on Interstate 470 at Interstate 70, according to a media release from Independence Police.
The vehicle refused to stop and a pursuit was initiated. The vehicle fled west on Interstate 70 and took the exit ramp for U.S. 40 Highway.
The white sedan then made a u-turn and proceeded back up the exit ramp, going the wrong way up the ramp, at which time the suspect vehicle collided head-on with an Independence Police car that was trying to assist the primary officer in the pursuit.
Lifesaving efforts were attempted on scene, but the driver died from their injuries received from the crash. The officer was transported with serious injuries to an area hospital. He was treated and released.
Police did not release the name of the officer or the victim. This crash remains under investigation by the Crash Investigations Unit.
