Police ID boy shot, killed near Kan. elementary school

KANSAS CITY, Kan. —Law enforcement authorities have identified the teen injured in a shooting near a Kansas elementary school who died as 15-year-old Kaden Bauswell.

Just before noon Tuesday, police responded  to the shooing in the 6600 Block of Cleveland near Hazel Grove Elementary School, according to a media release. Upon arrival, officers found the boy on the sidewalk, the victim of an apparent shooting. EMS transported him to an area hospital where he died.

The suspect fled in a vehicle just before police arrived.

Students participating in a public school summer program were in the building at the time of the shooting. School officials working with KCPD immediately placed the school on lockdown as a precaution until the area was secure. KCKPS officers were also at the school during dismissal.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — A teenager is hospitalized in serious condition after a shooting near an elementary school in Kansas City, Kansas.

The shooting happened Tuesday near Hazel Grove Elementary School. Police responding to calls about shots fired found a male teenager on the sidewalk near the school. Police say his injuries are potentially life-threatening.

No arrests have been made.

The school, which is hosting summer school, went into lockdown after the shooting, but children were later released to go home.

In a letter to families, the school said no children were in danger but some students witnessed the incident.
