1 dead after 4-vehicle wrong-way Kansas crash

SUMNER COUNTY—One person died in an accident just before 6p.m. Sunday in Sumner County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2024 Toyota Crown driven by Cap Cung, 45, Clive, Iowa, was northbound in the southbound lanes of the Kansas Turnpike as the traveled from Bell Plaine service area.

The Toyota struck a 2013 Ford Explorer driven by Colby Choate, 36, Marshall, Oklahoma. After impact, a 2022 Honda Civic driven by Thomas Richter, 67, Edmond, Oklahoma and a 2025 Western Star semi driven by Jason Jones, 38, West Bay Springs, Mississippi, struck the Ford.

Colby was pronounced dead at the scene.  EMS transported Cung to Wesley Medical Center. The other drivers were not injured. All four were properly restrained, according to the KHP.
