DOUGLAS COUNTY, Co —A small plane traveling from Kansas crashed in Colorado just before 2:30p.m. Tuesday.
The single engine Cessna P210N, with seating for 6, was flying from Dodge City Regional Airport to Centennial Airport and was on final approach to land when the crash occurred in a wide highway median on E-470 between Peoria and Jamaica, according to Kristin Eckmann with South Metro Fire and Rescue.

No passing vehicles collided with the aircraft. Two adults on board the aircraft were safely evacuated from the plane as the engine caught fire. Both adults sustained minor injuries and were transported to an area hospital.

Flames from the engine rapidly spread to leaking fuel and quickly consumed most of the aircraft. Firefighters used a hose line and turrets from the aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicles to extinguish the flames. Once the fire was extinguished SMFR and Colorado State Patrol Hazardous Materials Team personnel worked to mitigate concerns with the fuel.

A mixture of fuel and water was left in the wing tank which was drained into a catch basin. An environmental clean-up service assisted by containing and absorbing fuel that spilled in the median. Once the fuel was no longer a safety risk, a tow truck was used to remove the aircraft from the crash site. Authorities have not released the name of the pilot and passenger.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of the crash.
