SHAWNEE COUNTY —One person died from her injuries in a fire in an apartment in Topeka.
Just after 4:30p.m. Monday, crews were dispatched to a fire at a home at 1132 SW Lane Street Apartment 11, according to Fire Chief Alan Stahl. Crews arrived to find smoke coming from the apartment. Fire crews quickly extinguished the fire, keeping the fire contained to the apartment where it started.
Occupants from other apartments exited from the apartment building prior to fire crews' arrival. Searching the structure firefighters were able to rescue a woman resident later identified as 51-year-old Terri L. Dones. She was transported to a local hospital with life threatening injuries and later died.
The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental associated with careless smoking. Working smoke detectors were located in the apartment.
