SEDGWICK COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after noon Wednesday on the Kansas Turnpike.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2019 Toyota SUV driven by Nicky Ray Thomas, 74, Canadian, Texas, was stopped on lane 3 of the plaza 53 toll booth.

The driver opened the door and fell out of the vehicle as he leaned out to pay the toll.  The SUV continued, traveled over the driver's legs and struck the KTAG arm and a section of the concrete barrier.

The unoccupied SUV then crossed oncoming traffic lanes, traveled down the embankment and came to rest off the road.

The KHP reported Thomas had minor injuries. They did not report where or if he was transported for treatment. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.
