
SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary of a detached garage in Wichita. Four police officers received minor injuries during the incident.
Just after 9:30 p.m. Sunday, police responded to a burglary in progress call at a home on North Crestview Lake, according to Officer Charley Davidson.
The homeowner reported a suspect was inside a detached garage. Upon arrival, officers discovered the garage entry door had been barricaded from the inside.
Additional officers were requested to help with the investigation, and they were able to push their way into the garage. Inside the garage, officers heard the suspect and learned the suspect had retreated and barricaded himself into another smaller room.
Officers attempted to remove him from the room, and they discovered the suspect started a fire. Officers requested the Wichita Fire Department for assistance and utilized fire extinguishers to extinguish the fire.
Firefighters were able to remove the 42-year-old suspect from the barricaded room. EMS transported him to an area hospital in critical condition and he remains hospitalized, according to Davidson.
The four police officers received minor injuries from smoke inhalation and were transported to an area hospital for medical treatment and released.
