Kansas teacher placed on leave after charged with sexual battery

COWLEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas high school teacher on sex crime allegations.

On Dec. 15, USD 470/ Arkansas City High School administration contacted the police regarding an alleged incident reported by a student, according to a media release from police.

An 18-year-old female student reported to the administration and later to the police that a teacher at the high school had touched her inappropriately without her consent.

Arkansas City police conducted a complete investigation, that included numerous interviews and presented the case to the Cowley County Attorney’s office for review.

The county attorney charged 38-year old Jacob Sumpter with Sexual Battery regarding the reported incident. Sumpter is an Ag teacher and is now on paid leave, according to a statement from USD 470. The school district has assigned a long-term substitute teacher for Sumpter's classes.

Sumpter is scheduled to have a court appearance on January 30 at 9 a.m. in the Arkansas City District Court, according to the release.
