MONTGOMERY COUNTY — First responders are alerting the public after a kitchen incident that could have led to serious injury.
According to fire officials in the city of Independence, Kansas, within the last couple of weeks, their department responded to an emergency involving a child whose hair became entangled in a KitchenAid mixer. Fortunately, the child's mother acted quickly and immediately unplugged the mixer, preventing what could have been a much more serious injury, including a partial scalp injury.
"Many of us enjoy having our children help in the kitchen while cooking or baking. While this incident ended without injury, it serves as an important reminder that accidents can happen in just seconds."
When working around any equipment with moving parts—whether it's a kitchen appliance, power tool, garage equipment, or a vehicle—always take a few simple safety precautions:
Tie back long hair.
Avoid loose clothing and dangling jewelry.
Keep children closely supervised around operating equipment.
Unplug appliances before attempting to free anything caught in moving parts.
Never reach into or near moving machinery while it is running.
