MANHATTAN —One person was injured in an accident just after 3p.m. Tuesday in Manhattan when a vehicle struck the Manhattan Fire Department (MFD) Firehouse #2, 1100 Poyntz Avenue.
Crews heard the crash and found a passenger vehicle had struck the west apparatus bay with a single patient trapped in the vehicle.
Personnel immediately started patient care and worked to free the trapped driver. A Riley County Emergency Medical Service (RCEMS) ambulance is normally parked in that bay, but was out of the station at the time of the accident. After extrication was completed, the patient was transported by ambulance to Ascension Via Christi hospital.
The firehouse sustained structural damage and Manhattan Fire Department personnel shored the building to make it safe until permanent repairs can be made. Old Engine 1 was moved out of the firehouse to allow an ambulance to still respond out of the station. The apparatus where Manhattan Fire Department Quint 2 is housed was not affected.
