
RILEY COUNTY— Authorities have made an arrested in connection with a house fire Sunday in Manhattan.
Investigators have determined the fire was intentional, according to Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Almes. Police arrested Mahbooba Babrakzai, 37, of Manhattan on requested charges that include four counts of aggravated arson.
Babrakzai remains confined in the Riley County Jail on a total bond of $50,000.
Just before 4p.m. on Sunday, fire crews were dispatched to a fire at a home a 903 Thurston Street in Manhattan, according Almes.
As crews arrived, they found a 1-story duplex with heavy smoke showing from the front. One occupant received smoke inhalation but refused treatment by Riley County EMS on scene. Two lizards were rescued from 901 Thurston by firefighters. The fire was extinguished within 20 minutes.
Four adults and one child were displaced from 901 Thurston Street and one adult was displaced from 903 Thurston Street.
Loss is estimated at $10,000 to contents and $50,000 to the structure.
