
SHAWNEE COUNTY—One person died in an accident just after 1p.m. Tuesday in Topeka.
The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Kenworth semi driven by Carl Anthony Miles, 67, Topeka, was exiting the Bettis Asphalt Concrete Supply of Topeka parking lot at 2350 NW Water Works Drive just off Interstate 70 and traveled northbound.
The semi entered the railroad tracks and an eastbound Union Pacific train struck the semi. The impact caused the semi to spin out, land on the passenger side and became fully engulfed in flames. Heavy smoke and flames were visible throughout the area.
Miles was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to First Call. There were no other injuries.
Topeka Fire crews and Topeka Police coordinated with several law enforcement agencies on scene, as well as Kansas Gas Service due to damage to a gas line. There were no other injuries reported.
