Kan. woman who called 911 after shooting her son identified

SEDGWICK COUNTY– Law enforcement are investigating a shooting that sent a teen to the hospital in critical condition and his mother, identified as 46-year-old Tesha L. Florence as identified by booking records to jail.

Just after 8 a.m. Wednesday, Sedgwick County Emergency Communications received a 911 call from Florence reporting that she shot her son, according to Wichita Police Captain Aaron Moses.

Police, Sedgwick County EMS and Wichita Fire Department personnel, responded to the scene.

First responders located a 16-year-old boy inside an apartment with a single gunshot wound. EMS transported him to an area hospital where he was extremely critical condition.

Officers detained a 46-year-old Florence of Wichita who is the victim’s mother. During the investigation into this case, detectives learned of a previously unreported incident from March 2024 where Florence threatened an ex-husband and his current girlfriend with a gun.

Just after 4:30p.m. Wednesday, Florence was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on requested charges Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Assault Domestic Violence and Aggravated Assault

Investigators continue to gather information and the facts will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney for formal charging consideration.
