SEDGWICK COUNTY —One person died in a duplex fire on Christmas night.

Just after 11p.m. Wednesday, someone walking a dog saw flames coming out of the back window of a home in the  700 block of E. Meadowlark in Derby and called 911, according to Derby Fire Chief John Turner.

Crews arrived, entered the home and found a man in his 70s in the back of the residence who was pronounced dead at the scene. A pet cat also died, according to Turner.

The victim was home alone at the time of the fire. There were reports of another resident but that person was accounted for, according to Turner. The other portion of the duplex did have some smoke damage.  Investigators are working to confirm what caused the fire. The victim's name has not been released.
