
KANSAS CITY— A jury convicted a a 32-year-old Kansas City man in the murder and kidnaping of Gilberto Gutierrez in May 2021, according to Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker.
Ahmad R. Herring, 32, was found guilty of Murder 2nd Degree, Kidnapping 1st Degree, Robbery 1st Degree, and two counts of Armed Criminal Action.
According to court records, Kansas City police were dispatched on May 11, 2021, on a reported missing person and the victim's family told them they had not heard from their father. But bloody clothing of the victim had been found. On May 17, 2021, a dead body was found; it was wrapped in a tarp and found near 56th and Elmwood.
The victim was identified. He died from several stab wounds. During a search of a vehicle associated with the defendant, police detectives found receipts for drop cloths and bleach.
Several cellphones also were recovered. Tests for DNA showed the defendant's DNA on a zip tie recovered near the victim.
Herring will be sentenced on June 21. A co-defendant is awaiting trial.
