Lee Edward 'Ed' Depperschmidt

Lee Edward “Ed” Depperschmidt, 85, Rush Center, Kansas, died Saturday, May 23, 2020, at Pleasant View Home, Inman, Kansas.

Ed was born April 16, 1935, in rural Liebenthal, Kansas, the son of Marcus and Magdalena E. (Herrman) Depperschmidt.  He was a resident of Rush County, Kansas, for 40+ years, moving from Norfolk, Virginia. 

He served in the United States Marine Corps for 20 years and was proud to be a veteran.  During his military career, he served two tours of duty in Vietnam, and was a member of Marine Helicopter Squadron One (HMX-1).  HMX-1 is responsible for the transportation of the president and vice president of the United States, heads of states, Department of Defense officials, and other VIPs as directed by the Marine Corps and White House Military Office.  Upon his retirement from the Marine Corps, he co-owned and operated Depperschmidt Steel Siding with his son, Paul Depperschmidt.

Ed’s hobbies included going to the casinos, yard work, mowing with his riding lawn mower, old cars, and time spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.  He loved that he shared a birthday with his youngest great granddaughter, Demi.

On July 21, 1961, he married Mary Cox at Las Vegas, Nevada.  She preceded him in death July 4, 1995.

Survivors include:  one son, Paul Depperschmidt (Starla Parker, La Crosse, Kansas; one daughter, Janice Mohler (Kevin, Bella Vista, Arkansas; six grandchildren, Valerie Avila, Grapevine, Texas, Andrew Depperschmidt, La Crosse, Kansas, Jacob “Jake” Depperschmidt, Garden City, Kansas, Torre Shultz, Holcomb, Kansas, McCashen Mohler, Garden City, Kansas, and Desmaranda Carver, Anderson, Missouri; seven great grandchildren, Jairdan Mohler, Jenasie Mohler, and Breckyn Shultz, all of Holcomb, Kansas, Gannon Mohler, Bentlee Beavers, and Demi Beavers, all of Garden City, Kansas, and Gabriel Avila, Grapevine, Texas; one brother, Dennis Depperschmidt, La Crosse, Kansas, and one sister, JoAnn Fincher, La Crosse, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Depperschmidt; an infant daughter, Peggy Kay Depperschmidt; three brothers, Gerald Depperschmidt, LaVern Depperschmidt, and Charles “Charlie” Depperschmidt; and four sisters, Rosie Krom, Mary Alice Stetler, Ida John, and Patricia “Patty” Hasenfratz.

Because of the current challenges the world is facing at the present time, this is a private, immediate family only, memorial service and inurnment, with no visitation. 

In lieu of flowers or plants, the family requests memorials to the Rush County EMT’s.
