The Hays Board of Education approved the hiring of Len Melvin as the new Hays High girls’ basketball coach at their meeting Monday night.

Melvin previously coached girls basketball at Hays Middle School from 2016-2018. During the time the team collected a 82-12 record. He also was the middle school boys coach (Felten Middle School) which had just an 8th grade team which was divided into three teams. The "A" team went 81-15 during those years. The 2003-2004 squads went a combined 45-0.

Melvin also spent time as a high school assistant for boys basketball, football, softball and golf for a total of 16 seasons.

Melvin replaces Kyle Porter who resigned after one season to take the head coaching job at Silver Lake.

Melvin becomes Hays High's fourth head girls' coach in four years.
