The Buick driver failed to yield, as the Polaris Ranger decelerated to make a turn. The SUV rear-ended the UTV causing it to overturn. Broyles, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle.
The Buick came to rest in the ditch on the southeast corner of the intersection. The Polaris Ranger came to rest in the ditch on the south west corner of the intersection.
Lifesave transported Broyles to Stormont Vail in Topeka for treatment of serious injuries. Rickabaugh, who was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash, sustained nonlife-threatening injuries and was evaluated at the scene by Emporia/Lyon County EMS. Deputies then paced her under arrest for on a requested charge of driving under the influence and aggravated battery with a vehicle.
The accident is still being investigated, according to Brozek.
