Sheriff IDs Kan. woman who died trying to save dog in house fire

BROWN COUNTY  — Authorities  investigating the cause of a fatal Kansas house fire have identified the victim as 74-year-old Delores Goens, according to Sheriff John Merchant.

Just before 3:30a.m. Thursday, crews responded to a fire at a home near U.S. 36 highway and Sycamore Street in Fairview, Kansas, according to Merchant.

A family member reported that Goens and her husband initially escaped the fire, but that she went back inside to try to save a dog and did not survive, according to Merchant. Her husband was hospitalized.

The state fire marshals office has been notified as standard procedure to investigate the cause of the fire, according to Merchant. 

 No foul play is suspected.

Brown County —Officials say a woman has died in a rural northeastern Kansas house fire.

The fire was reported around 3 a.m. Thursday in Brown County, according to Sheriff John Merchant.

A family member reported that the 74-year-old woman and her husband initially escaped the fire, but that the woman went back inside to try to save a dog and did not survive.

The Brown County Sheriff’s Office says it's investigating the cause of the fire, but noted that no foul play was suspected. Officials said the man who escaped the fire was hospitalized. Authorities have not released the victims' names.
