Child playing with lighter started Kansas house fire

SHAWNEE COUNTY — Authorities say a child playing with a lighter caused a Friday night house fire in Topeka.

Just after 11:30p.m., fire crews responded to a home at 2804 SE Highland Court, according to Deputy Chief Kelly Adams.  

Upon arrival, fire crews found smoke coming from the single story home. The occupants of the home were outside when firefighters arrived. A search of the structure confirmed all occupants were out.

A preliminary investigation indicates the fire cause to be accidental associated with a child playing with a lighter, according to Adams.

The estimated dollars loss $13,000 including $3,000 associated with contents loss. Three adults and one child were displaced as a result of the fire. The home had no working smoke detectors, according to Adams.
