KANSAS CITY (AP) — A former Kansas City-area police officer already serving a life sentence in a 2008 murder pleaded guilty Friday to killing a second woman.

Jeffrey Moreland pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the Oct. 29, 2010, death of Nina Whitley, 75, in her south Kansas City home. Moreland was sentenced to 20 years on the murder charge and 10 years for armed criminal action.

Moreland was sentenced earlier to life without parole for his conviction in Cass County in the murder of 30-year-old Cara Jo Roberts, who was shot to death in her Harrisonville home in November 2008. Moreland was convicted in 2013.

DNA evidence connected Moreland to both murders, Jackson County prosecutors said.

Authorities acquired the DNA after another Harrisonville woman told police in the summer of 2011 that Moreland had raped her.
