Police: 3 caught after pair of Kansas armed robberies

SEDGWICK COUNTY-Law enforcement authorities are investigating an armed robbery and have three suspects in custody.

Just before 8 p.m. Tuesday, police were dispatched to an armed robbery at the Dollar General in the 2900 block of N. Broadway in Wichita, according to Officer Kevin Wheeler. A 19-year-old and a 26-year-old employee reported three masked suspects came into the store and one suspect robbed them of at gunpoint. The three suspects ran from the business in an unknown direction. The employees were not injured.

A witness provided a description and tag number for the suspects’ vehicle. Officers located the vehicle in the 1400 block of North Mt. Carmel. As officers attempted to contact the driver,

A suspect identified as Emilio Arango, Jr. 19, Wichita, exited the vehicle and ran. He was apprehended after a brief foot pursuit.

Just before 9 p.m. officers in the area contacted employees of a nearby Dollar General store located in the 2900 block of West 13th Street. Two female employees reported that they had been robbed as well. The employees stated that one suspect entered the business and robbed them at gunpoint, while the other suspect stood outside as guard. The two suspects two cash and ran from the business. The employees were not injured.

Officers set up a perimeter in the area, and with the help of a K-9, officers located 18-year-old Mack Maddox and a 16-year-old and took them into custody after they ran from the officers. Police also recovered cash and a gun. 

Arango, Maddox and the juvenile are being held  on two counts of aggravated robbery.  The 16-year-old also faces a charge of criminal possession of a firearm by a juvenile, according to Allred.
