Update: Man injured in fire at Kan. nursing home dies

SHAWNEE COUNTY- One person injured in a weekend fire at a nursing home in Topeka has died.


Just after 10p.m. Saturday, fire crews responded to the report of a structure fire at 2075 SW Fillmore Street in Topeka, according to Fire Marshal Michael Martin.


Upon arrival, fire crews reported smoke in the hallways and were led by the Rose Villa nursing home staff to a victim that had sustained life threatening injuries from a fire. The victim identified as Alvie J. McCluskey, 64, was evacuated and treated at the scene, before being transported to a local hospital where he died, according to Martin.


The fire was contained to the room of fire origin and was out on arrival.


The Fire Investigation Uni determined the cause of the fire as accidental associated with careless use of smoking materials.


The structure sustained no damage; contents loss is being estimated at $1500.00. Working smoke detectors were found within the structure and operated as designed.
