WICHITA — Wichita City Councilman James Clendenin announced his resignation Tuesday morning during the city's regularly scheduled meeting.
Clendenin and two others are named in a lawsuit filed by Wichita mayor Brandon Whipple related to an ad published on YouTube during the mayoral election last year that falsely suggested that Whipple was accused of sexual harassment when he served in the Kansas Legislature.
In November, Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett filed a civil petition seeking the ouster of Clendenin for his role in the smear campaign.
Clendenin had a difficult time reading through his resignation statement during the council meeting. He will serve until the end of the month.

In a recording from last year that was released this fall, Clendinin, Sedgwick County Commissioner Michael O’Donnell, and state Rep. Michael Capp can be heard plotting to frame Sedgwick County Republican Party Chairman Dalton Glasscock for the smear video. .
O'Donnel resigned his place on the Sedgwick County Commission last month.
On Tuesday afternoon, the city of Wichita released a document on the process for filling a council vacancy for an unexpired term.
