KANSAS CITY(AP) — A Kansas City man has been sentenced to 23 years in prison for fatally stabbing a mother of four in 2018.

The Jackson County Prosecutor's office said Sunday that Xzavior McDowell, 20, was sentenced Friday in connection with the death of 27-year-old Deandrea Vine. McDowell had previously pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and armed criminal action.

Vine was found stabbed to death on July 28, 2018 in front of the home where she and her four children were living with other family. At the time of her death, Vine had a 7-year-old daughter, a 5-year-old son, a 3-year-old daughter and a 21-month-old son.

McDowell and Vine worked together at a Walmart, and McDowell told police she he was in a relationship with Vine before her death.

McDowell told police after his arrest that he became upset with Vine after she told him she was pregnant and he was the father. According to court documents, McDowell said Vine tried to stab him but he took the knife away and stabbed her “a bunch of times.”

Vine was found with stab wounds to her head, face, neck, chest, stomach, arms and hands.

McDowell also told investigators that he had thrown away the knife he used in the stabbing and burned his bloody clothes.
