Sheriff: Deputies find brass knuckles on Kansas moped thief

MONTGOMERY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for theft and other charges.

Just before noon Tuesday, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a Moped sitting in the Eggberts restaurant parking, 1724 Main Street in Independence, Kansas, according to Sheriff Ron Wade.

The moped matched the description of one that was reported stolen earlier in the month. Deputies responded to Eggberts and observed a green and black Solona 50 Evolution scooter sitting in the parking lot. Deputies entered the restaurant and contacted the driver of the scooter who was identified as 25-year-old Peter Hawkins of Independence.

While deputies were on scene, they confirmed the scooter was still reported stolen.

Deputies searched the scooter and located marijuana, methamphetamine, and scales. Deputies attempted to place Hawkins in custody when Hawkins started resisting arrest. Deputies were able to safely gain control of Hawkins and placed him in custody. Deputies searched Hawkins person and located brass knuckles. Hawkins was transported to the Montgomery County Department of Corrections. The scooter was transported to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and the owner was made aware it had been recovered.

The case has been sent to the Montgomery County Attorney’s Office with the recommended charges of, possession of methamphetamine, possession of stolen property, criminal carry of weapons (knuckles) and interference with a law enforcement officer.
