FINNEY COUNTY—Authorities are working to determine the cause of a fire at a motel in Garden City.

Just after 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, fire crews responded to a reported fire at the Dusty Trail Inn, 2808 N. Taylor Plaza in Garden City, according to Fire Chief Jon Irsik.

Fire personnel observed heavy smoke and fire coming from a second story window. They made entry into the building and encountered overwhelming heat and smoke conditions.

Fire personnel then transitioned to a defensive fire attack due to the amount of fire and presumed condition of the building.

After the majority of the fire was extinguished, fire personnel were able to transition back into interior operations of salvage and overhaul. During the second entry phase, fire personnel found that the fire had caused the second and third floors to collapse.

Just before 7p.m.the fire was deemed under control.  There were no injuries reported.

The Kansas State Fire Marshal’s office is assisting with an investigation. Officials have not released a damage estimate. The motel was closed for business.
