Barton County COVID cases up 40% to start September

GREAT BEND — The number of active COVID-19 cases in Barton County went up more than 40 percent during the first seven days of this month. The county health department reported 127 cases countywide as of Tuesday afternoon.  

The biggest increase occurred in Hoisington. There were 32 active cases in Hoisington on Tuesday compared to 12 on Sept. 1. Great Bend, Ellinwood, Albert and rural Barton County also saw an increase in the number of cases. Only Pawnee Rock had fewer cases with the number there dropping from eight to four during the reporting period.  

44.8 percent of Barton County residents 12 years and older are fully vaccinated against the virus. A vaccine for children under the age of 12 has not yet been approved.
