CHEROKEE COUNTY—One person died in an accident just before 4p.m. Saturday in Cherokee County.
The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2018 Ford Explorer driven by Maryann E. Atkinson, 35, Columbus, Kansas, was westbound on Southeast Greenlawn Road at Southeast 20th Street one mile north of U.S. 166.
The driver failed to stop for the stop sign. A northbound 1996 Ford van driven by Charla B. King, 37, Columbus, struck the Explorer.
A passenger in the Explorer identified as Matthew C. Atkinson, 36, Columbus, Kansas, was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Derfelt Funeral Home. EMS transported Atkinson to Freeman West Hospital. King and four juveniles in the van had minor injuries. The patrol did not report where they were treated. Atkinson was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.
