JOHNSON COUNTY —Law enforcement continue waring the public of a mail theft sxcap.
According to Lenexa Police, thieves are targeting outdoor post office mailboxes to steal mail containing checks. They "wash" the checks, altering the payee and amount, and drain victims’ bank accounts! There have been several reports of this around Johnson County, including here in Lenexa.
To protect yourself, police suggest: avoid using outdoor USPS mailboxes, especially after pickup hours.
Use the mail slot inside the post office for safer drop-offs. Use a gel pen when writing checks which makes them more difficult to "wash". Don't use window envelopes which can show that a check is inside and Consider electronic payments like online banking or apps for added security.
