TMP girls knock off Trego at MCL tournament

PLAINVILLE – TMP-Marian closed the first half on a 7-0 run and Emilee Lane scored a career-high 26 points as the Lady Monarchs took down Trego Thursday night in Plainville 47-40 to advance to the MCL tournament fifth place game Saturday.

Both teams got off to a slow start, combining for just 11 first-quarter points. Trego led 7-4.

TMP’s Emilee Lane scored the first eight points of the game for the Monarchs helping them stay within striking district at 9-8 early in the second quarter.

After Trego had built a 16-11 second quarter lead the Monarchs answered with a 7-0 run to take a 18-16. Sophia Balthazor hit her second of three three-pointers in the game as part of that run.

The Monarchs took that two-point lead into the halftime break and never trailed in the game again.

Lane scored six straight to open the second half for TMP and eight of their first 10 in the half to put TMP up six at 28-22.

Trego was able to hang around thanks to the 13 points in the third quarter by Trego’s Lili Shubert but it wasn’t enough as TMP built a 32-29 lead through three quarters.

In the fourth quarter Trego closed within four at 36-32 but the Monarchs outscored Trego 11-8 the rest of the way as they secure the 47-40.

Game highlights

Emilee Lane scored a career-high 26 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead TMP.

Lili Shubert finished with a game-high 27 for Trego.

TMP improved to 8-2 with the win while Trego dropped to 8-3.

The Monarchs will play Ellis in the fifth-place game at 12 p.m. Saturday in WaKeeney. Trego will take on Oakley in the seventh-place game at 10 a.m. Saturday.
