Kansas sheriff's deputy accused of domestic violence

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged domestic

On July 4, Wichita police arrested 31-year-old Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Detention Deputy Akeem Payne on requested charges of misdemeanor Domestic Violence Criminal Damage to Property and two counts of Domestic Violence Assault, according to sheriff's Lt. Benjamin Blick.

The charges stem from an incident involving the deputy’s domestic partner. When probable cause exists to support the elements of a misdemeanor domestic violence offense, an arrest is mandatory under Kansas law.

Payne has been employed by the Sheriff’s Office for just over a year.

In addition to the criminal case, the Professional Standards Unit of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is also conducting an investigation.

Following the arrest, Deputy Payne was suspended without pay pending the outcome of the criminal and internal investigation.
