Police capture suspect in killing of 22-year-old Kansas man

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement investigating a homicide identified the victim as 22-year-old Yancy Whitehead of Topeka and have made an arrest, according to Police LT Donna Eubanks.   

On Sunday Police asked for help to locate a person of interest in the homicide. Just before midnight police reported the arrest of 49-year-old Robert Reyes, 49, of Topeka.  He is being held on requested charges of first-degree murder, according to Eubanks.

Just after 3a.m. Saturday police responded to a reported shooting in the 2900 block of SE Freemont Road in Topeka, according to Police LT Donna Eubanks. First responders located Whitehead with life-threatening injuries. He was  pronounced deceased on scene by medical personnel.

Topeka Police were later notified of two other individuals that had arrived at an area hospital. One individual had life-threatening injuries and one a non-life-threatening injury.

This is the city’s 3rd homicide investigation of 2025.
