JOHNSON COUNTY —Two adults and a child were displaced after a weekend fire possibly caused by carless discard of smoking materials.

Just after 3a.m. Saturday, crews were called to a fire at 120th and Hayes Street in Overland Park, according to a media release.

First responders found smoke and fire coming from the back of the 2-story duplex. Fire crews went to work attacking a fire in the chimney box that spread from the ground level to the second story and into the ceiling. It took firefighters 20-minutes to bring the fire under control.

Two adults and a child escaped safely and are staying with relatives. Residents in the adjacent unit were able to reoccupy. There were no injuries and the unit did have working smoke alarms.

One of the residents reported smoking outside before the fire. While investigators believe the cause of the fire to be careless discard of smoking materials, the exact cause is still under investigation.  Authorities did not release a damage estimate.
