SW Kan. man arrested after high-speed chase in stolen van

FINNEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating an auto theft and have a suspect in custody.

Just before 3:30p.m. July 1, police responded to the Fulton Convenience store, 601 East Fulton Street in Garden City, where a Dodge Grand Caravan had just been taken from the property, according to a media release.

A Finney County sheriff's deputy located the van near U.S. 83 and East Schulman Avenue and attempted a traffic stop. The driver identified as 39-year-old Richard Johnston, refused to stop.

A police officer located near U.S. 83 and East Spruce Street and the Kansas Highway Patrol assisted in the pursuit and it continued south into Haskell County.  Ultimately the chase ended along Haskell County Road 140 where Johnston was arrested without further incident.

He is being held on requested charges of theft, flee and elude and interference with law enforcement. There were no injuries reported during or after the chase.
