
DOUGLAS COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are celebrating after searchers found a missing 6-year-old boy early Monday.
Just before 5p.m. Sunday, a family member reported the boy was missing in a wooded area south of Lawrence, according to a statement from the Douglas County Sheriff's office. Multiple deputies and area officers conducted a search of the immediate area over several hours.
After an extended search through the night, deputies found the child walking near a tree line just before 9a.m. Medics at the scene examined the boy and he appeared to be fine, according to the sheriff's office.
The search included search dogs from the Kanas City, Kansas Fire and Winchester Fire Department, a drone from the Douglas County Sheriff's office, another from Lawrence Police and the Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter.
Douglas Consolidated Fire District 1, Willow Springs Township Fire, Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical, Baldwin City Fire and Baldwin Police in addition to community members who provided support through donations of food and drinks for those searching.
