Man charged in July 4th murder near Kansas City middle school

KANSAS CITY—Law enforcement authorities have filed felony charges  in the July 4, fatal shooting of a man whose body was found in the 8900 block of Longview Road in south Kansas City, according to Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker.

Jairo Garcia-Perez, 24, faces Murder 2nd Degree and  Armed Criminal Action charges.

According to court records filed Wednesday, on July4, Kansas City police officers responded to the 8900 block of Longview Road in regard to a person on the ground near Smith-Hale Middle School

Officers arrived and observed the victim a 30-year-old Hispanic man later identified as Carlos Martinez-Ramirez suffering from wounds. He later died of his injuries.

A witness told police that he saw a white van drive by and the victim and two or three males exit it. Another witness advised police officers that the victim and defendant had had issues in the past. A witness reported the victim had struck the defendant with his fist. And  a witness reported the victim struck the defendant with his fist, and the defendant shot the victim several times.

Detectives recovered 9 mm shell casings from the scene. The defendant told police he shot the victim, then tossed his gun alongside the road.  Garcia-Perez is being held on bond of $200.000.
